Mountain bike France

At the gates of the Mont Blanc range, discover an Alpine MTB eden filled with epic singletrackRef CY04

For experienced MTB riders, the Beaufortain (valley of Beaufort) is one of those almost unknown mountain bike paradises that make us "fall in love" with it: - On the way up, a network of wide, rolling mountain pasture tracks, used to collect milk for the production of the famous Beaufort cheese. They allow you to gain altitude very gradually and to pass from valley to valley in an absolutely splendid mountainous landscape: spruce forests, mountain pastures, traditional chalets and blue lakes in the foreground, massifs and summits of the Alps extending as far as the eye can see in the background... You sometimes have the impression of being "glued" to the Mont Blanc! - On the descent, countless small technical, narrow and winding paths, sometimes on dreamy ridges, and sometimes in forests worthy of Canada... A treat for lovers of fun and technical descents!

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Albertville - Arêches

Itinerary start: Rendezvous with the organization team is on day 1 at 1pm at Albertville SNCF railway station. On request we can book the previous nights accommodation for you in Albertville.

We leave the Olympic city of Albertville and ride into the long and winding valley that leads into the heart of the Beaufortain. Our vehicle drops us off above the village of Beaufort where we can mount our bikes for our first rides.
Through a forest of spruce trees, we take a track on the side of the mountain offering a clear view of the Aravis chain and the resort of Les Saisies. At the end of the forest, a sudden and striking view of the Beaufortain summits: the Grand Mont (2686m), the Pierra Menta (2714m)...
We start our crossing towards Arêches, until the start of our first small technical path through the forest... The first few switchbacks go perfectly well in an almost Canadian atmosphere!

Distance and altitude gain : approx 20km and 650m

Day 2: Arêches - Lac de Saint Guérin - Cormet d'Arêches

We leave the small family resort of Arêches and its typical chalets, to attack the first slopes of the Grand-Mont. We leave the forest in the mountain pastures and descend to the Saint Guérin lake. This is one of the 4 hydro-electric dams of the Beaufortain. Around the lake, and climb through the mountain pastures to Cormet d'Arêches, at the foot of Crêt du Rey (2633m).
Night in a small refuge lost in the middle of the mountain pastures. We will probably see the milking of the tarines, the cows that are particularly well adapted to life in the mountains and which provide the milk used to make the famous Beaufort cheese.

Distance and altitude gain : approx 35km and 1400m

Day 3: Cormet d'Arêches - Lac de Roseland - Plan de la Laye

Through the mountain pastures, we take a winding track that allows us to gain altitude almost without realising it... A short portage (about 10 minutes), allows us to access the ridge separating the lakes of Saint Guérin and Roselend. An unforgettable descent on the grassy ridge overlooking these emerald blue lakes, with the imposing Mont Blanc massif in the background. We reach the Col du Pré, from where we descend to the shores of Lake Roselend. After a stretch of rolling track along the lake, it's off again for a winding climb to the top of the Treicol mountain pastures.
This is followed by a demanding rollercoaster ride across the mountain to reach the Plan de la Laye, surrounded by the mountain pastures. Night in a lodge/gîte.

Distance and altitude gain : approx 40km and 1300m

Day 4: Lac de Roseland - Lac de la Gîte - Lac de la Girotte - Hauteluce

We pass from lake to lake, always taking advantage of these famous alpine pasture tracks which allow us to appreciate the surrounding landscape... A short portage (or rather "push"), and here we are at the col de la Gîte: superb 360° panorama of the Alps. A magnificent single track descent awaits us to arrive just below the Col du Joly. We then descend to the foot of the Girotte dam, where we start a loop (optional) leading us above the Girotte lake. Again a very nice winding descent through the mountain pastures and spruce forests...
Night in a lodge/gîte.

Distance and altitude gain : approx 40km and 1200m

Day 5: Hauteluce - Les Saisies

Ascent towards the Tête des 3 Coins (2067m), which separates the Beaufortain from the Val d'Arly. Magnificent view of the Aravis mountain range and its famous Pointe Percée. A long traverse on the flank gives us a good overview of the Beaufortain summits and the famous Grand Mont. A summit that has become increasingly well known since hundreds of people rush to its summit to cheer the participants of the famous Pierra-Menta ski-mountaineering race.
Superb ridge trail to reach Les Saisies. Here we are in the "Nordic" area...

Distance and altitude gain : approx 40km and 1300m

Day 6: Les Saisies - Val d'Arly - Les Saisies

Today, we will try the fantastic downhill trails on the Val d'Arly side and continue to explore the countless trails of the Saisies Nordic area...

Distance and altitude gain : approx 40km and 1100m

Day 7: Les Saisies - Albertville

After climbing Mont Bisanne as a warm-up, we embark on an incredible descent of more than 1600 metres of vertical drop! Only narrow and winding paths that are as fun as they can be, with a few small steep climbs to remember that you have to earn your descents! Yeeeepeeee !....
Our vehicle takes us back to the Albertville train station in the afternoon.

Altitude gain : approx 400m

Itinerary end: Separation at the end of the tour is in Albertville at 3-4pm. On request we can book the following nights accommodation for you in Albertville.

Distances and altitude gain are an indication only and may vary.

Travel insurance

It is important to be correctly insured when embarking on a cycling holiday. We recommend checking the details of your travel insurance (if you have one) and, if necessary, subscribing to our contract below. Please note that France Bike Trips is simply an intermediary between you and the insurance company.

You can choose between these travel insurance contracts while completing your booking form:

  • I subscribe to the "comprehensive multi-risk" insurance cover (4.5%), minimum premium of 15 €:
    This contract covers assistance, repatriation, lost or stolen luggage, holiday interruption and cancellation. To see the full contract, click here.
  • I purchase the "cancellation only" insurance cover (2.5%), minimum premium of 10 €:
    This policy covers cancellation only. To see the full contract, click here.
  • I purchase the "repatriation & assistance" insurance cover (1.6%), minimum premium of 10 €:
    This policy covers assistance, repatriation, lost or stolen luggage and holiday interruption. To see the full contract, click here.

Recommendation:
If you choose to take out a travel insurance policy with another insurance company, please check that the search and rescue coverage is suitable: area covered, expenses included, risks covered (as an indication, a minimum cover of 15 000 € is recommended). Please note that credit card insurance rarely offers this type of coverage.

For guided trips we limit the size of our groups from 5 (min) to 12 (max) persons in order to ensure security and conviviality.

Our / Your state of mind

- A "group" tour: If you join a guided tour, you will be part of a group for several days. This is a superb opportunity to meet new people and share some magical moments. However, a group tour requires that each person show friendliness, openness and mutual respect for their fellow travellers.

- An "adventure" tour: despite the most careful preparation, adventure tours can present unforeseen events. Accepting these risks will help you enjoy your trip to the full, in the knowledge that your guide, our local partners and the entire France Bike Trips team will offer you the most suitable solutions to any given situation.

Bike and plane / train

If you decide to bring your own bike, be aware that transporting a bike by plane or train is no longer an issue. However a few simple guidelines help to optimise the transport and avoid potential damages that could occur.
Your bike must be transported in a designated bike bag (standard size 120x90cm). This maximal size allows you to travel with your bike as "hand luggage" in any TGV and SNCF trains.
It is very important that you protect your bike in the bag. After having deflated the tires, removed the wheels (by removing the quick release mechanisms), pedals and rear derailleur (which is left hanging on the chain), we recommend you wrap your bike inside the bag in a sheet of dense foam (thickness of 3 to 5 cm). A piece of cardboard or rigid plastic positioned between the foam and the inside of the cover can be beneficial to provide more rigidity.

Once folded up the bike bag will take up very little space and will be transported by the assistance vehicle during your tour.

Bike bags are available directly from France Bike Trips at a cost of 70 euros, plus postage.

GPS tracks

If you choose to book a self-guided tour, we provide the GPS tracks of the route. You will be able to download the GPX type files from your France Bike Trips user account once you receive our travel documents by email. They are compatible with all current GPS software applications and editors.

Accuracy

These tracks have been created using professional mapping software. There may be slight differences between the GPS track and the reality on the terrain. The GPS tracks should thus be considered a "plus" to help you find your way. However, they are by no means a substitute for orientation with the help of the highlighted map material.

The distances and altitude gain in the tour's programme remain the reference. Indeed, real-world altitude and mileages can be different and vary significantly from the data shown in GPS software applications.

Data privacy

We ask you not to publish these GPS tracks on any website, social network or anywhere else. Their elaboration required many hours of hard work, both to create the track in the field, but also in our software applications. The non-respect of this ethic would force us to remove these valuable tool from our offer.

Analogue maps (optional)

We offer digital map material with highlighted tracks for our self-guided tours by default. These are printable (A4, pdf format).

On request, we can provide you with analogue maps containing the highlighted itinerary and route infos (official French maps at a scale of 1:25,000). Shipment will be made to the accommodation of your extra night before the tour.

Price of this option incl. shipping within France: see supplementary services

Please let us know in the booking form if you would like this option. Please also give us an accommodation address for shipping if you do not book an extra night through us before the tour.

Self-guided tour "user guide"

Active autonomy: what you need to know for our self-guided tours

In order to achieve the planned tour programme, you must:

  • Guide yourself with the highlighted maps and road book;
  • Choose suitable start times adapted to the lengths of the daily stages as well as your own riding pace, and leave an adequate safety margin of time;
  • Obtain daily weather forecasts from your hosts, and take into account the weather conditions when planning journey times;
  • Arrive at the booked guest houses and hotels listed in the programme on the given dates;
  • Bring the necessary personal equipment to carry out the tour. France Bike Trips equipment list constitutes the necessary minimum;
  • Carry insurance policies and emergency telephone numbers with you at all times;
  • Be familiar with basic first-aid steps;
  • In the event of any problems during your trip, contact France Bike Trips (contact information in your travel documents). Possession of a mobile phone that works in France is strongly recommended.

Self-guided tours are undertaken without a guide and at your own risk. France Bike Trips cannot be held liable for any route error, misconduct, personal imprudence, inadequate planning or inappropriate reactions in the event of incidents.

Any programme change of your own initiative is under your responsibility and at your expense.

Having said this, with our advice and good preparation, you should be able to look forward to a wonderful, trouble free holiday. Enjoy your trip!

The landscapes are beautiful and the trails are exceptional.
The accommodation and food are very good.
The guide knows his job and the region perfectly which is an asset to not miss anything.
The trails are very technical, but that's part of the beauty of the tour.
I am used to travelling with my mountain bike but this tour will remain a unique experience for me.
