Road bike France

A sublime blend of high-altitude cols and lonely roads amidst the Southern Alps and Italian PiedmontRef CR07

South of the Galibier, the air turns wild and the sun takes over. This 6-day loop from Briançon is a deep dive into a mineral world, spanning the French Southern Alps and Italian Piedmont. It’s a journey beyond the famous Grand Tours, deep into the heart of the Queyras, Alpi Cozie, Mercantour, and Ubaye. On the horizon, the mighty Monte Viso and the sublime Massif des Écrins will accompany us throughout the journey. We start our trip with the legendary Col d'Izoard, followed by the marmot-filled slopes of the Col d'Agnel. From there, we drop into Italy to tackle the wilder, raw slopes of Sampeyre and Fauniera before continuing our adventure through the French Col de la Lombarde and Col de la Couillole. Our return to Briançon takes in the mighty ascent to the Cime de la Bonette—Europe’s highest road—followed by the Col de Vars to complete the loop. To crown the adventure, the trip offers an additional day's riding to savour this alpine cycling paradise: choosing between crossing the ochre-hued Cians and Daluis Gorges in the Alpes-Maritimes, or heading deep into the Mercantour to conquer the unforgettable Col d’Allos and Col de la Cayolle. Whether you’re a col hunter or seeking alpine serenity, the Giants of the Southern Alps do more than challenge your legs. They conquer your soul.

Detailed itinerary - The "Alpes Maritimes" Option

Day 1: Briançon (France) - Sampeyre (Italy)

Itinerary start: Rendezvous with the group and our tour leader on Day 1 at 9 a.m, near Briançon train station (Gare SNCF, detailed meeting point will be provided in your travel documents). On request, we can arrange the previous night's accommodation in Briançon.

On this first day, we leave Briançon via the Cervières Valley to begin the climb to the first giant of our tour, the Col de l'Izoard. In the first part, we are surrounded by larch trees before reaching the lunar landscape of the summit and the famous Casse Déserte. After a stop at the memorial to Coppi and Bobet, we continue towards the Guil Valley, the main river of the Queyras. After lunch, we brace ourselves to tackle no less than the third highest road pass in the Alps, the Col d'Agnel. The climb is long and difficult, with an elevation gain of 1,350 metres and the last 5 km with an average gradient of 8%. The pass itself, marking the border between France and Italy, offers magnificent panoramic views of the Alps. With a little luck we can catch a glimpse of the nearby Monte Viso (3,841 m). Descent and overnight in the Valle Varaita.

Passes of the day:

  • Col de l'Izoard (2,360 m)
  • Col Agnel (2,746 m)

Distance: approx. 90 km / Elevation gain:approx. 2,600 m

Day 2: Sampeyre - Demonte (Italy)

We spend the entire day cycling in the Italian Piedmont. From Val Varaita, we will ride over two important Alpine passes, Colle di Sampeyre and Colle Fauniera. Although the roads are generally in good condition, the surface of these two passes has cracks, some gravel and potholes. The Sampeyre is a steady but steep climb. We pass through the village of the same name before reaching the summit area with its beautiful panoramic views. We then descend into Val Maira, where the second big climb of the day begins, the Colle Fauniera. It is a 22 km long, wild climb with gradients over 10%. The road is narrow and winding, with some steep sections and in rather poor condition. That said, the landscapes all along are magnificent, and we can admire a marble bust of Marco Pantani and a view of Monte Viso at the summit. We end the day with a final long descent, this time into Val Stura. Caution is advised here too. Overnight in Demonte.

Passes of the day:

  • Colle di Sampeyre (2,284 m)
  • Colle Fauniera (2,484 m)

Distance: approx. 85 km / Elevation gain: approx. 2,900 m

Day 3: Demonte (Italy) - Beuil (France)

Today, a narrow, winding road takes us uphill to the next giant on our route, the Col de la Lombarde (2,350 m). As this road is not very busy, the climb is a real pleasure. At the pass, we leave the Val Stura and return to France via a rapid descent on a wide road. We are now deep in the Vallée de la Tinée, with the Côte d'Azur and Nice just a day's ride away. Shortly before Saint-Sauveur-de-Tinée, we turn right to begin the long but steady climb to the Col de la Couillole, the scene of a mountain finish on the 20th and penultimate stage of the 2024 Tour de France. The descent from the pass is pleasant and takes us quickly to the village of Beuil, where we will stay for two nights.

Passes of the day:

  • Col de la Lombarde (2,350 m)
  • Col de la Couillole (1,678 m)

Distance: approx. 90 km / Elevation gain: approx. 2,800 m

Day 4: Beuil

Nestled high above the valleys, Beuil is a charming alpine village, well-known to both locals and professional cycling teams. Ideally located near the Cians and Daluis Gorges, it offers the perfect setting for a loop ride or a well-earned rest day. For those who choose to ride, the loop descends first into the Cians Gorges, a spectacular canyon of deep red rock. Reaching the Var Valley, we briefly enter the Préalpes d'Azur before climbing back through the dramatic Daluis Gorges, equally impressive and wildly beautiful. The section between Daluis and Guillaumes is simply breathtaking. We complete the loop with the climb of the Col de Valberg, returning to Beuil in style.

Passes of the day:

  • Col de Saint-Raphaël (874 m)
  • Col de Valberg (1,650 m)

Distance: approx. 120 km / Elevation gain: approx. 3,100 m

Day 5: Beuil - Barcelonnette

We start with the gentle ascent of the Col de la Couillole (1,678 m), before enjoying one of the most beautiful descents in the region towards the Tinée Valley. Next comes a true icon: Europe's highest paved road, the Col de la Bonette. Including the optional loop to the Cime de la Bonette, the route rises above 2,800 metres. This is a monumental climb delivering 2,000 metres of elevation gain in one continuous effort while crossing multiple alpine ecosystems along the way. The descent toward the Ubaye Valley is just as rewarding. We finish the day in Barcelonnette, often called "the most Mexican of the French towns," with its unique architecture and relaxed alpine atmosphere.

Passes of the day:

  • Col de la Bonette (2,715 m)
  • Cime de la Bonette - optional (2,802 m)

Distance: approx. 110 km / Elevation gain: approx. 2,600 m

Day 6: Barcelonnette - Briançon

The last day takes us deep into the Upper (Haute) Ubaye, setting the stage for the final giant of our adventure: the Col de Vars. This iconic climb, part of the famous « Route des Grandes Alpes », marks the ultimate challenge of the journey. As the road rises, we immerse ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty of the Haute Ubaye: vast, silent and profoundly alpine. At the summit, a quiet exhilaration takes over: the satisfaction of having conquered the last major climb. We descend swiftly into the unspoiled landscapes of the Queyras, then trace the Durance Valley along beautiful balcony roads, suspended between sky and valley. The journey concludes in Briançon, bringing this extraordinary mountain challenge to a memorable close.

Passes of the day:

  • Col de Vars (2,109 m)

Distance: approx. 95 km / Elevation gain: approx. 1,800 m

Itinerary end: The tour ends in Briançon at around 3-4pm. On request we can book the following night's accommodation in Briançon.

Distances and altitude gain are an indication only and may vary.

Our / Your state of mind

- A "group" tour: If you join a guided tour, you will be part of a group for several days. This is a superb opportunity to meet new people and share some magical moments. However, a group tour requires that each person show friendliness, openness and mutual respect for their fellow travellers.

- An "adventure" tour: despite the most careful preparation, adventure tours can present unforeseen events. Accepting these risks will help you enjoy your trip to the full, in the knowledge that your guide, our local partners and the entire France Bike Trips team will offer you the most suitable solutions to any given situation.

Bike and plane / train

If you decide to bring your own bike, be aware that transporting a bike by plane or train is no longer an issue. However a few simple guidelines help to optimise the transport and avoid potential damages that could occur.
Your bike must be transported in a designated bike bag (standard size 120x90cm). This maximal size allows you to travel with your bike as "hand luggage" in any high-speed and regional trains.
It is very important that you protect your bike in the bag. After having deflated the tires, removed the wheels (by removing the quick release mechanisms), pedals and rear derailleur (which is left hanging on the chain), we recommend you wrap your bike inside the bag in a sheet of dense foam (thickness of 3 to 5 cm). A piece of cardboard or rigid plastic positioned between the foam and the inside of the cover can be beneficial to provide more rigidity.

Once folded up the bike bag will take up very little space and will be transported by the assistance vehicle during your tour.

Bike bags are available directly from France Bike Trips at a cost of 70 euros, plus postage.
