Mountain bike FranceACROSS THE AUVERGNE VOLCANOES V3 A classic MTB tour through the Massif Central

Welcome in Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park. Program: four volcanic chains offering a variety of landscapes renewed after each pedal stroke. The chain of Puys: Volcanoes like in stories. We begin here the slalom around "mini-volcanoes", on single tracks of scoria, like in a dream ... We arrive at Sancy, our first worthy volcanic edifice: terrain turns steeper and offers us a beautiful downhill on green crests. The Cezallier appears: oh cow! Yes, here we find a basalt plateau with smooth and hilly reliefs where cows abound... Finally, we arrive in Cantal, the largest european volcano. A sweet country rich in contrasts: changing climate, relief between Mongolian plateaus and alpine mountains. Mythical single tracks to make us discover the massif: between Puy Mary and Plomb du Cantal, between airy ridges and smooth downhills on grasslands.

Day 1: Clermont Ferrand - Volvic - Laschamp

Itinerary start : Rendezvous with organization team is fixed on day 1 at 9.30 am at SNCF train station of Clermont Ferrand. On demand we can book for you one night in Clermont Ferrand for the previous day.

We start our trip through the paved lanes of Clermont Ferrand... Let's go to a first volcano! The day is devoted to the northern crossing of the Puys chain, via the pass of Goules. Then comes the part with the very spectacular Puy de Come and its very technical "cheer" (old lava slide), Puy de Pariou, and Puy de Dome (1465m). The latter made legendary by the Tour de France. We have now two possibilities: carry our bike to reach the top and the Temple of Mercury, or take a very playful bypass via the superb single track of Ceyssat Pass.

Last downhill to Laschamp village by the forest of Ceyssat. Night in hostel.

Distance traveled: 40 km

Positive altitude difference: 1350 m.

Day 2: Laschamps - Mont Dore

We leave the youngest volcanoes of Auvergne, including the two "Strombolian": La Vache and Lassolas. From Servieres Lake, ascent of Guery Pass (1268 m), near the rocks  of "Tuillieres and Sanadoire" and Puy Gros  (1485m). We reach then Banne d'Ordanche (1512m) before descending to La Barboule famous in the mountain bike world due the downhill site "Taillefer" at Chariannes. Small  climb to the Mont Dore at the foot of  Sancy.

Distance traveled: 50 km

Positive altitude difference: 1100 m.

Day 3: Mont Dore - La Godivelle

We start our daily stage riding towards Puy de Sancy, the highest point of Massif Central (1885m), via  "Le Chemin des Médecins", and a cable car (+500  m). Downhill from the southern side by the pass of Couhay and the mountain resort of Super-Besse before climbing up to the volcanic plateau of Cezallier. Route dotted with lakes, craters and small volcanoes,  lakes Chauvet, Pavin and Montcineyre...  and  finally  twin lakes of Godivelle. Night at Godivelle....

Distance : approx. 35 km

Positive altitude difference : 900 m

Day 4: Godivelle - Dienne

Riding on the plateau of Cezallier, a sort of "Wild West Auvergne", we come across many herds of  "Salers" (cows from Cantal) and "Aubrac" (cows from Aveyron) grazing on pastures rich of gentian...  Detour via the glacial cirque of Artoux, the Signal du Luguet (highest point of Cezallier with its 1551m), and the pass of Chamaroux. Places of a different age: Foirail of Brion, the village of Godivelle, Chamaroux and far away the Cantal… Downhill into the Valley of Allanche before reaching the Cantal in the forest of Pinatelle. Overnight at Dienne.

Distance traveled: 60 km

Positive altitude difference: 500 m.

Day 5: Dienne - Le Claux

After crossing Pinatelle and the first glacier valley: Santoire;  great ascent on the program: Puy de Niermont (1620 m) by the vast plateau of  Limon. Downhill via Pass of Serre to the nordic ski resort of Claux (1000 m)… Night at Claux.

Distance: 55 km

Positive altitude difference: 1300m

Day 6: Claux - Prat de Bouc

Let's go for the great apotheosis day on the crests of Cantal volcano: a paradise for free-riders. A breathtaking  panorama. If you have some breath left after the ascension of Puy Mary (1785 m)! After caring your bike to Breach of Roland, a technical dreamy single track via Rombiere Pass and Puy Griou is waiting for you... The ascent of 600 m with the cablecar to Plomb du Cantal, which culminates at 1855m and the last downhill of the day to the pass of Prat de Bouc (1396  m)... Night in hostel of Prat de Bouc.

Distance: approx. 35 km

Positive altitude difference: 1400 m

Day 7: Prat de Bouc - Vic sur Cère

Ascension to the pass "Pas des Alpins" (1750m) and the Plomb du Cantal. Downhill to Vic sur Cere, ancient capital Carlades, which hosted the "Queen Margot". Long way down via a roman road, which is also the route of the pilgrimage St Jacques de Compostela from Le Puy en Velay to Conques... The succession of Puy Brunet (1806 m), Puy de Cede, Puy Gros (1594 m) and the area, ground for trial runs, on the chaos of Casteltinet.  Remain the gorges of "Pas de Cere" before the final arrival to the train station of Vic/Cere.

 Distance: approx. 25 km

 Positive altitude difference: 600 m

Distance and altitude difference are given for information only.

Itinerary end : The trip ends at Vic sur Cère at 4pm. The best solution to go back to Clermont Ferrand is the train. (about 2 hours, direct train). On demand we can book for you one supplementary night in Clermont Ferrand.
