Road bike France

Great riding, great food, great scenery! Ref CR30

The Périgord is one of the top cycling destinations in France. And rightfully so... A rich and diverse terrain, with quiet shady back roads, lush green valleys, and a variety of landscapes with breath-taking views. The area is also steeped in a rich history. This trip takes in the discovery of the Vézère Valley and its prehistoric sites, famous medieval fortresses and sleepy forgotten villages, as well as the Dordogne Valley… But it’s also a culinary paradise for meat lovers: we return to our hotel at the end of each day, where you can look forward to relaxing evenings and fine local food and wine.

Centre-based tour in the Périgord-Dordogne

5 days/4 nights (arrival and departure day + 4 cycling days)

Why a centre-based tour? Certain areas are well adapted to centre-based tours, where you stay in the same accommodation all week, but ride a different itinerary each day. The Périgord is particularly well suited to this type of tour, as its cultural and natural attractions are concentrated in a relatively small area. Our accommodation is in the heart of the Périgord, and offers a number of off-the-bike activities.

One of the major benefits of a centre-based tour is the flexibility it offers:

  • You choose which days to do particular rides, depending on the weather or your energy levels
  • Option to take a day off to relax or pursue another activity
  • Avoids the hassle of packing your bags each morning, allowing you to settle into your accommodation
The accommodation

Your accommodation for this centre-based tour is a 3* hotel with heated swimming pool in the valley of Vézère. It is set in a quiet countryside and disposes of a large park (around ten hectares!), sheltering different kinds of wildlife : deer, fox, hundreds of birds, to the delight of children and wildlife photography lovers. A well-being area with a heated pool, spa and sauna is at your disposal. In the morning, a rich buffet breakfast awaits you in a separated building overlooking the pool and the park. And in the evening, you can enjoy delicious regional specialties prepared from local products, if you choose to dine at the hotel. Ideally located halfway between the medieval town of Sarlat, the cave of Lascaux and Les Eyzies, the world capital of prehistory, this traditional family-run hotel is an oasis of calm.
The comfortably furnished rooms are available in two different categories and spread over two buildings. The price of our package includes accommodation in village side rooms ("côté village"), located in the main house in the heart of the village. The cosy rooms dispose of large double beds or two twin beds, with a shower or bathtub. They are all equipped with television, safe, free Wifi, and a courtesy tray.

Comfort version: Comfort park side rooms, are located in the building adjacent to the beautiful park ("côté parc"). Most of the rooms have a balcony or a private terrace overlooking the valley and the surrounding countryside, and air conditioning, in addition to the basic equipment (television, safe, free Wifi, and a courtesy tray).

Level

Starting from your accommodation, we offer 4 different daily loops, each with 2 levels of difficulty. You can do these daily tours (see below) during your stay depending on your condition, weather conditions, daily shape and taste.

Daily loops
  • Loop #1 Valley of man and Cro-Magnon: Humans have inhabited the Périgord since prehistoric times. So they are far from being not the first to roam these magnificent landscapes! Since for at least 30,000 years, Homo Sapiens has been using the numerous hollows for shelter and the abundant local resources for to live. Today, we set out on our bikes on what may be the the most beautiful loop of the week: the magnificent Vézère reveals all its secrets to us; among the villages that line up like a string of pearls
one is more beautiful than the other...
Distance (km) and altitude gain (m):
    Level 1: 75 and 850
    Level 2: 95 and 900
  • Loop #2 The Corrèze and its Causse: Today we start from the hotel to the east of the Black Perigord, towards the Corrèze and its and its limestone plateaus ("Causses", the French name for the large-scale limestone plateaus at 700 to 1200 m altitude in the French Massif Central). Massif Central). We reach the village of Salignac Eyvigues and its medieval castle, which lies in the triangle of 3 departments (Dordogne, Corrèze and Lot). We then follow for a few kilometers the Borrèze before going up the Causse. End of the stage in the valley of the Dordogne, which leads us on a cycle path to the gates of Sarlat.
Distance (km) and altitude gain (m):
    Level 1: 80 and 900
    Level 2: 130 and 1850
  • Loop #3 The Lot and its truffle fields: We start our day along the eastern heights of Sarlat, before crossing the Dordogne and reach the Lot further south. The highlight of this loop is the picturesque village of Gourdon and its medieval alleys. Here, the truffle is king. On the way up, the route passes through Domme, considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Périgord. Visit highly recommended!
Distance (km) and altitude gain (m):
    Level 1: 90 and 1250
    Level 2: 120 and 1650
  • Loop #4 Confluence of valleys: Vézère, Dordogne... two valleys that you now know a little, well, even passionately! This time, we're heading west towards Bergerac, more precisely the area of Limeuil, where these two remarkable valleys and their rivers meet.
A relatively flat stage with few meters of altitude and a gentle profile, to enjoy, relax or to pedal big gears. Your last stage to say goodbye to this beautiful region.
Distance (km) and altitude gain (m):
    Level 1: 100 and 1100
    Level 2: 125 and 1250

Distances and altitude gain are an indication only and may vary.
