A great MTB tour through beautiful Brittany - coast to coastRef CY5M

A journey between the Côtes d'Armor and the Argoat country, taking us from the salty coastal air to the deep forests and rich heritage of inland Brittany. We cross an invisible border that separates those who live on the land, with its wood, its farming and its animals, and those who live by the sea, with its fishing, its ports, and the never ending lashing of the waves against the rocks and the harbours. Come and discover which Brittany you are…

  • Our tour through the Monts d'Arrée massif in Brittany has a road share of about 40%. Brittany is criss-crossed by countless small roads which have replaced original forest and field tracks over the years. Nevertheless, we decided to keep the same itinerary because it still offers beautiful off-road riding and breathtakingly wild landscapes. However, we advise mtb purists who prefer larger shares of trail- and off-road riding to check out our other tours.

Day 1: Morlaix

Itinerary start: Rendezvous with the organisation team is on day 1 at 1pm at our hotel in Morlaix (trip details and the hotel address will be sent to you shortly before your trip).

Rendezvous early afternoon in Morlaix. We then set off on a half-day ride to discover the charming town, surrounding countryside and beautiful coastline. Night in a hotel.

Distance covered: approx. 30 km / Ascent: 500 m

Day 2: Morlaix - Huelgoat

Today offers the first full day of riding. We leave Morlaix and head in the direction of the Monts d'Arrée. We start by climbing out of the deep valley of Morlaix in order to reach our first singletrack trails that wind their way through the Monts d'Arrée, land of the "Korrigans" (dwarfs and goblins). We take the time to visit the Armorique Regional Natural Park, with its strange and beautiful chaotic rock formations. We end the day at the Huelgoat Lake with a night in a hotel.

Distance covered: approx. 45 km / Altitude gain: 750 m

Day 3: Huelgoat - Chateaulin

Today sees us climb the Monts d'Arrée, well known to French mountain bikers thanks to the Roc'h des Monts d'Arrée mountain bike event. The setting offers beautiful moorland landscape with spectacular views! In order to reach the top our route mixes climbs and descents for around 20 kilometres on trails that vary from smooth and fast to tight and technical. A superb day's biking that zigzags its way between the peaks of the Monts d'Arrée, with beautiful panoramic views of the Armorique Regional Natural Park. We could almost be mistaken for thinking we were riding the tundra above the Arctic Circle in high summer! Our route then takes us past the Lac de Brennilis and the Roc'h de la Chapelle Saint Michel de Braspart. Night in a hotel in Chateaulin.

Distance covered: approx. 65 km / Altitude gain: 850 m

Day 4: Chateaulin - Locronan

Time to climb again! From the banks of the Aulne, a mere 8 metres above sea level, a long climb takes us to the top of the Menez-Hom. At 330 metres the closest Breton summit to the ocean is hard going, but the reward and views at the top are well worth it! To the west the Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Douarnenez, the Pointe du Raz and the Presqu’île de Crozon. To the east the Monts d'Arrez and the ridgeline we rode the previous day. The other reward is the superb technical descent that takes us back down to the coast. 330 metres of vertical descent! We finish the day with a fairly easy ride that takes us to one of the most beautiful villages in Brittany, Locronan, our overnight stop.

Distance covered: approx. 50 km / Ascent: 1000 m

Day 5: Locronan - Quimper

A rugged and hilly day awaits us for this last itinerant stage. Our route takes us over the mountains of Plogonnec in order to join Quimper, capital of the Cornouaille Bretonne, and final destination of our trip. Great trails lead us to the top of the Plogonnec, and down to the town of Quimper. A string of steep sided valleys mark the end of our route, before we follow the banks of the Steir to the centre of Quimper.

Distance covered: approx. 40 km / Ascent: 700 m

Day 6: Quimper - Quimper

A last half-day loop takes us to the cliffs of Stangala, and a last breath of fresh sea air before the end of our journey… We luncheon together before saying "Kenavo et Ar Wech All" (Goodbye and until next time)!

Distance covered: approx. 35 km / Altitude gain: 450 m

Distances and altitude gain are an indication only and may vary.

Itinerary end: Separation is at our hotel in Quimper on day 6 at around 2pm (after lunch). Return to Morlaix possible by regional train (1h45, 18 EUR per person, carriage of bicycles for free).

"An amazing experience. My partner and I are relatively fit, occasional mountain bikers (although we did a bit more before the trip!) I knew some of the Brittany coastline but it was amazing to explore the central parts using tracks that, at times, appeared rarely travelled. At other times the chosen route mixed existing VTT routes to produce 6 days of classic cycling through forests, farmland, villages and moorland. There were short sections that we had to walk--mainly due to our technical incompetencies however, the vast majority of this route was cyclable with some MTB-experience and confidence to tackle long rocky downhills.
We completed the journey using the self-guided formula. Information and equipment provided was superb and all accommodation was excellent. We had a second week on the North Brittany coast where we found an abundance of signed VTT trails.
A fantastic holiday and we would highly recommend both France bike trips and their Morlaix-Quimper Brittany MTB holiday."
